Forex sentiment: which side the market is on, with the source
Knowing where the crowd stands does not tell you where price will go, but it helps you not to enter blind. Sentiment Live combines market positioning and the technical picture for ten instruments, and for every figure says where it comes from.
The instruments
EURUSD, GBPUSD, USDJPY, AUDUSD, USDCAD, NZDUSD, USDCHF, gold (XAUUSD), bitcoin and ethereum.
Where the data comes from
- For the seven forex pairs: the Commitments of Traders report from the CFTC, the US futures regulator. It shows large speculators' positions in currency futures; it is measured on Tuesday and published on Friday, so it is a weekly figure.
- For gold, bitcoin and ethereum: the ratio of long to short accounts on Binance futures, updated every hour. These are crypto futures traders, not clients of a forex broker, and the page says so.
We do not show percentages from a single broker's clients passed off as the sentiment of the whole market: we prefer public sources with a known method, even if they update less often.
How to read it
Sentiment is usually read the other way round: when almost everyone is on the same side, much of the fuel to keep going in that direction has already been used. That is why a very one-sided crowd is a reason to be careful, not an order to execute. The contrarian reading is a common interpretation, not a rule: positioning can stay extreme for a long time while price keeps going.
The technical picture alongside
For each instrument, next to the positioning, you find the price, the daily change, volatility, moving averages, the 14-period RSI, MACD and Bollinger bands calculated on daily candles, and the latest news. When positioning and technicals tell the same story it is worth a closer look; when they contradict each other, it is a good reason to wait.
